I'm curious, give me the strategy!Leading Without Proximity Requires a Shift
For decades, corporate leadership clung to a simple belief: effective leadership demanded physical presence. This shaped executive expectations and training, emphasizing the importance of being immersed in office life. (Even today, organizations clinging to outdated policies mandating physical presence reveal their old-school mindset.)
With COVID, the world transformed overnight. Leaders scrambled to maintain team cohesion from living rooms and home offices. The familiar tactics for leading and connecting became obsolete.
Office spaces, once buzzing with spontaneous conversations and quick brainstorms by the coffee machine, fell silent. The traditional markers of leadership - reading body language in meetings, impromptu hallway discussions, and visible displays of authority - no longer applied. In their place emerged a new reality where leaders connect through screens, striving to maintain deep bonds.
The usual cues - nods of agreement, furrowed brows of concern - became elusive. Hallway chats morphed into scheduled video calls, and informal check-ins became bullet points on an agenda.
This profound shift in communication demanded a serious update to our leadership approach.
Alicia C., VP/Controller navigated the complexities of leadership through coaching:
"If you are considering coaching with Stacy, DO IT! She is great! My goal in working with Stacy was to work on more effective and persuasive communication tactics in dealing with a burned out, unhappy manager at our company. After working with Stacy, I was able to help the employee to be more accountable for herself and her team. Our communications are also much improved."
Digital Check-Ins Won't Cut It
Common advice for remote leadership often revolves around frequent digital check-ins and online collaboration tools. However, this approach merely forces previous leadership elements into an online format, barely scratching the surface of effective remote leadership.
So, here's a thought I've been considering lately:
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩, 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐲.
This evolution requires amplifying understanding and empathy, honing crystal-clear communication, and building trust without the luxury of physical proximity. By focusing on these deeper, more meaningful aspects of leadership, we can create stronger, more motivated, and better-performing teams.
As a secondary benefit, this shift in leadership style can create a more inclusive environment.
Remote work presents an opportunity to redefine leadership, focusing on connections that elevate emotional intelligence and recognize the diverse strengths of team members who thrive in different settings.
For corporate leaders, this shift offers both a challenge and an opportunity to redefine excellence in leadership - creating a model that's welcoming, understanding, and adaptable to the evolving nature of work.
I imagine this approach becoming the new gold standard for future leadership.
Surprisingly, even tech giants and innovative companies at the forefront of workplace evolution seem to cling to outdated notions. We still hear the refrain: "Creativity and connection happen more in person." This echoes historical resistance to automation - a reluctance to change rooted more in comfort than fact.
Where are the true innovators in this space?
In my opinion, it's perplexing to see companies that pride themselves on disruption hesitating to fully embrace remote leadership. Have real estate investments become excuses for leadership stagnation?
While in-person interaction can spark creativity, it's not the only path. People can ignite creative sparks virtually, asynchronously, and in myriad ways beyond physical proximity.
The challenge - and opportunity - for leaders now is to prove that creativity and innovation can thrive in this new landscape. It's time to explore and embrace the full potential of remote collaboration.
As we navigate this semi-remote landscape, the deeper exploration of remote work offers a chance to innovate and excel in new, meaningful ways. We can harness the strengths of remote work to create a leadership model that's more inclusive, empathetic, and effective.
I invite leaders to experiment with this concept. How might remote leadership evolve your approach? What new possibilities could it unlock for your team? The future of leadership is not bound by physical spaces - it's defined by the strength of the connections we forge.
Are you ready to lead this change?
